Madrid, Aug 7 - Andy Warhol, who was born in Pittsburgh Aug 6, 1928, continues to inspire the art world on what would have been his 85th birthday Tuesday.
Warhol's work is still among the best known on the international art scene 26 years after his death in New York Feb 22, 1987, at the age of 58.
The high selling prices for the pop artist's works is proof of his popularity and the interest that he has continued to generate in the decades after his death.
Warhol's works dominated art auctions in the past year, continuing a three-year trend that saw total sales climb to $329 million.
Madrid, June 21 - Sheila Loewe is the fifth generation to lead her family's Spanish fashion house and will also serve as head of the Fundacion Loewe, setting her sights on expanding abroad via the universal language - dance.
"I feel excited and much happier than I would have imagined," Loewe said.
Sheila, who took the company's helm from her father, Enrique Loewe, has started writing a new chapter in the firm's history, signing a three-year agreement with Spain's National Dance Company that covers a series of projects aimed at teaching dance in public schools.
Madrid, May 22 : Design and fine arts students from Spain's Universidad Francisco opened a show Tuesday at Madrid's Museo del Traje that showcases their talents.
The exhibition, which runs until May 26, seeks to show how the students are preparing to enter a tough real world that lacks many things but not creativity, organizers said.
The situation is tough, but the students have a level of desire and hope that will help them "tackle the world", professors Itziar Esteban Infantes and Abigail Aguirre Araujo said.
Madrid, May 10 - Actor Alfredo Landa, one of the best-known faces in Spanish film and the creator of a genre known as "landismo", died Thursday in Madrid, sources at the Spanish Film Academy told EFE. He was 80.
Retired from public life since 2008 and in unstable health, which had generated much public speculation, Landa was being cared for at a nursing home near his Madrid home.
King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia and Crown Prince Felipe and his wife, Princess Letizia, sent messages of condolence to Landa's widow.
Madrid, May 10 - The drummer for the popular 1980s band Ole-Ole, Juan Tarodo, has died of leukemia, Spain's SGAE composers and music publishers association said Thursday. He was 52.
The musician, songwriter and producer passed away Wednesday in Madrid.
Tarodo, who shifted his focus to producing after the group broke up in 1993, had been forced to step away from the music scene because of his illness, SGAE said.
Ole-Ole was popular for hits such as "No controles", "Voy a mil" and "Conspiracion".
Madrid, April 25 : David Delfin, whose design language stands out in the Spanish fashion industry, said he conceives of his field as "multi-faceted" and influenced by a range of disciplines, including the cinema.
"We have a very cinematographic approach. Each project tends to have an intrinsic script, in which the title is extremely important. Once I choose it, everything flows," the designer said Wednesday at the fourth "60 Minutes of Fashion with EFEstilo" breakfast, held at Agencia EFE's offices in partnership with ACME (the Spanish Fashion Designers' Association).
Madrid, April 13 - The big winner in Spain's Goya film awards, "Blancanieves", has been nominated for Mexico's Ariel prize in the category of best Ibero-American picture.
Pablo Berger's silent, black-and-white version of the Snow White tale features Mexican actor Daniel Gimenez Cacho in the leading role and is scheduled to open in Mexico June 21.
"Blancanieves" will vie with Chile's "No" and the Ecuadorian feature "Pescador" for the Ariel for best Ibero-American film.
Last year's award went to Spain's "Pa negre", the fifth Spanish film to snag the Ariel.
Madrid, April 11 - After portraying the most twisted villain in the history of the James Bond franchise, Javier Bardem plays a neo-Nazi in "Alacran enamorado" ("Scorpion in Love"), a film based on the novel of the same name by his older brother Carlos.
"I fixed on several people to compose the tone and appearance of Solis," the Oscar-winning actor said at a press conference in Madrid with the rest of the team behind the film, which opens in Spain this Friday.
