Pablo Berger's version of the Snow White tale picked up 10 awards in all, including Best Original Screenplay and a Best Actress nod for Maribel Verdu as the evil stepmother.

The Cuban entry, zombie pic "Juan de los Muertos" (Juan of the Dead) took the prize for Best Ibero-American Film.

Malaga (Spain), Feb 18 - Spanish copla singer Marife de Triana died Saturday in the southern province of Andalusia, according to government officials in the Mediterranean town of Torremolinos where she lived. She was 76.

The singer and actress, whose real name was Maria Felisa Martinez Lopez, had been admitted on an unspecified date to the Xanit International Hospital in the nearby town of Benalmadena.

A funeral chapel was installed at Torremolinos' city hall as an official expression of affection and respect for the artist.

Montevideo, Nov 1 - Spanish writer and historian Fernando Diaz-Plaja died Wednesday of pneumonia in Uruguay, where he had lived for the past decade, doctors told EFE. He was 94.

Diaz-Plaja died at the Hogar Espanol for the elderly in Montevideo, where he had been admitted two months ago due to "various physical complications", the doctors said.

He had moved in 2002 to Punta del Este, Uruguay's main tourist center, and last June he broke a hip for the second time in several months, a circumstance that resulted in a marked deterioration in his health.

Barcelona, Oct 24 - Spanish soprano Montserrat Caballe has been admitted to the intensive care unit of Barcelona's Sant Pau Hospital after suffering a mild stroke, authorities at the medical centre told EFE.

Caballe, 79, is showing favourable progress, fully conscious and able to speak with her doctors and family members, the authorities said.

The singer suffered a slight stroke last week in Russia that caused her to faint and in the process broke a bone in her arm, after which she was flown to Barcelona.
