New Delhi, July 12 - He wrestled his way from the ring to the big screen and the small one to enormous success. Dara Singh went from muscle man to hero and then uncle, father and friend in numerous character roles that endeared him to generations of fans.
Few people would have made the transition from the 'akhara' to the showbiz stage with the success of Dara Singh, who passed away at his home in Mumbai Thursday morning at the age of 84 after a brief illness.

Mumbai, July 12 - Former wrestling champion and actor Dara Singh died at his home here Thursday morning following a brief illness, doctors treating him said. He was 84.
"Dara Singh passed away peacefully at 7.30 a. m. this (Thursday) morning," said Ram Narain, COO, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, where the actor was being treated before he was shifted to his Juhu home late Wednesday.
"Angel now gone to shine like a star up above," the actor's son, Vindu Dara Singh, texted after his father's death.
Dara Singh had been undergoing dialysis at the hospital.
Mumbai, July 12 - Critically ill actor-wrestler Dara Singh was shifted from hospital to his Juhu home late Wednesday as it was his family's wish that the 84-year-old actor should be at home in the last stages of his life, a hospital official said.
"As his condition was deteriorating, respecting the wishes of the family he has been shifted home with ventilator and medicines. A nurse and doctor are at his home," Ram Narain, COO, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, told IANS.
"They wanted him to be at home during his last stages. We have facilitated this," he said.
Mumbai, July 11 - Wrestler-actor Dara Singh's condition continues to be very critical. He is undergoing dialysis at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital here and doctors say there has been significant damage to his brain.
"His condition is still very critical. MRI is showing significant damage to brain due to decreased oxygen supply to brain when he had the cardiac arrest," Ram Narain, COO, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, told IANS Wednesday morning.
"His condition is not good at all," his son Vindu Dara Singh said.
Mumbai, July 10 - Wrestler-actor Dara Singh, who is on life support system and undergoing dialysis, continued to battle for life Tuesday with doctors attending on him saying he was "very critical".
"He is still very critical. Very much with us," Ram Narain, COO, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, told IANS Tuesday morning.
The 84-year-old was admitted to the hospital Saturday following a severe cardiac problem, which later led to a kidney malfunction.
In his prime, Dara Singh was a world-famous wrestler and won the title of "Rustam-e-Hind" for his prowess.
Mumbai, July 9 - Wrestler-actor Dara Singh continues to be very critical and is now undergoing dialysis, a doctor said here Monday.
The 84-year-old was taken to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital Saturday following a severe cardiac problem.
He remained critical Sunday, and his condition hasn't improved since.
